US Education

With a budget totaling $ 972 billion the US government catered to 76.6 million students in 2007 with more than 17 million attending under graduate colleges of higher education in the US. Positive developments showed 85% achieving secondary diplomas up to 12th Grade. With the Open Door policy India and China are growing to be top providers of enrollment in US education. International students in 2008-09 rose to 2,69, 874 for under-graduation courses while 2,83,329 were admitted for post graduate studies. There was a healthy increase of 9.2 percent in 2008 from India as per the Open Door policy of the US Govt. while Chinese enrollment of under graduates showed the highest increase of 60%. The trend among foreign students studying in US from India is towards under graduate and OPT or Optional Practical Training. US Education in the United States is run by the US Department of Education. Public sector funding and control is three pronged viz. local, state and federal. Education in America evolved through many stages from colonial to free and compulsory education for children. High school education was offered in the 20th century with greater openness and decentralization. With regard to elementary education in the US, the age group for preschool ranges from four to six years while for elementary school is from ages six to eleven. Middle school children are of the age group between eleven and fourteen years while high school education begins from the age of fourteen up to eighteen years approximately. The medium of instruction is English. During high school although a great variety of courses are offered 65% is the pass percentage required in most schools with the exception of 60% in some schools in the US. Science, Math, Social Sciences, English and Physical Education are compulsory. Foreign language and health course are also considered mandatory for graduating through some high schools. Advanced and more challenging opportunities in US education are provided through AP and IB courses after 10th Grade. In 2009 49.8 million students attended public elementary and secondary schools out of which 35 million were from elementary and 14.8 were in high school. The pupil/teacher ration in US school education is 15.2. While 3.3 million teachers are employed in the United States of America in public school education, 0.5 million teachers are working in private schools with a pupil teacher ratio is 12.8.

Higher education in America

With regard to American higher education, Michigan State University offers higher education in various programs of engineering and technology besides other courses in US higher education to students in the country and overseas. Ranked 9th its enrollment stood at 45,520 students in 2006. According to the US Department of Education statistics the five colleges that enrolled the most number of students were University of Phoenix, Online Campus, Ohio State University, Miami Dade College, Arizona State University and University of Florida. In the year 2006, Distance Education programs ranged up to 11,200 courses at the college level out of which 66% were degree courses while the rest were certificate courses. Out of 4,200 institutions that offered distance education programs 1,000 public institutions offered 2 year programs. Moreover 1,500 private colleges no t for profit held 4 year programs and 300 private colleges for profit held four year programs. The Federal Government of USA offers education loans to students through FSA Programs of the US Department of Education.
