Education in Rajasthan

Rajasthan education is moving at quicker pace than before, as the 2001 survey reveal female literacy statistics that are far improved at 36.20 than that of 1991 which was as low as 16.31. With a total literacy rate at 61.03 in 2001 the state government is working out measures to promote universalisation of education in the state to achieve total literacy. Several programs and campaigns are conducted in more than hundred schools in Rajasthan. This state which is famous for its colourful variety in topography as well as art and culture is also gaining ground in the educational sphere. Historically known for its legends of bravery the name 'Rajasthan' means the 'dwelling of the king'.

Primary education has seen many milestones of development in Rajasthan. Being one of the largest states there are around six thousand government schools in Rajasthan under the control of State Government that have been set up in the thirty two districts of Rajasthan. The total enrollment of primary students in 2001 was 72,04,000 in 35,077 primary institutions of the state including the public and private schools.

Elementary education is offered to students who have completed the primary education. While in 14,807 elementary schools the enrollment in elementary education schools was 23,14,000 the number of students in secondary education in Rajasthan was 8,10,788 being admitted in 3,844 secondary schools. One of the oldest schools is St. Xavier's school in Jaipur set up in 1941 now boasts of extending up to college level in three streams viz. commerce, business administration and computer applications.

Senior Secondary schools admitted 4,01,380 students in the state's 1,789 schools in Rajasthan. As per the education system of 10+2 those students who qualify in the senion secondary examination of the Board of Secondary Education, Rajasthan or CBSE are eligible for admission in colleges.

Distance Education

Distance Education is growing popular in Rajasthan due to the global demand that has cascaded into local demand for jobs in the higher education categories. Distance education is promoted by the university in Rajasthan as it enables students living away from colleges and institutes of education to benefit through the distance learning facility. Some of the Distance Education Universities in Rajasthan are Jayoti Vidyapeeth Womens' University Directorate of Distance Education, Jaipur, Rajasthan and Jiwaji University Institute of Distance Education, Gwalior. Higher education facilities are on the rise as more and more students have been enrolled in colleges and institutes of technical education as well as distance education in Rajasthan. Twenty universities offering higher education have groomed 17,726 students for jobs in the IT Sector and other industrial as well as academic sectors. Moreover there are eight deemed universities. There are over 267 colleges at the degree level offering graduate and post graduate education in Rajasthan through several disciplines. Of the 1,80,743 degree students most of them are enrolled in the regular colleges offering arts, science and commerce degrees. Master of education in Rajasthan is offered by universities and institutes of education. There are 43 colleges of degree in education as well as 46 training schools. Medical education in Rajasthan is available in seven colleges offering MBBS degrees to students. At present 1959 students have been enrolled in these 7 medical colleges in Rajasthan.

Technical education

The Rajasthan state offers higher education in technical and other disciplines in the state. There are twenty seven colleges of engineering in Rajasthan. Along with St. Xavier's College, Jaipur offering management technology as well as information technology courses viz. BBA and BCA starting in July 2010, admission forms are available for 60 seats.

Also among the new Institutes of technical education like St Xavier's, one more new IIT Rajasthan has been announced by the Central Govt's HRD ministry. As per the minister of education, a four year program including computer science, engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering for 40 students in each discipline has been planned. At present there are fifteen Polytechnic Institutes offering various courses in technical education in Rajasthan. In the technical, industrial as well as art and craft trades 10,983 trainees have been enrolled.

Technical education in Rajasthan is monitored by the (DTER)Directorate of Technical Education of Rajasthan at Jodhpur. The results of NCVT and other examinations have been announced by the NCVT. Students who have appeared for Stenography or NCVT exams can refer to the DTER website for results.
