Education in Punjab

Punjab known as the wheat bowl of India is also renowned for offering to the world a brave woman and astronaut like Kalpana Chawla to the world. With its top ranking among other states, the Primary section is considered student friendly with an index (0.917) that towers considerably over other states. Punjab ranks seventh out of all the states, in the field of education. The four tier system of education in Punjab has evolved into a two tier system, with primary and middle as one section while high and secondary as the second tier in the system.

Present Literacy Status

While rapid progress is taking place economically in the agricultural and industrial sector efforts are on to improve the female ratio of education especially among the backward sections. As per Census 2001, Punjab's population is 24.29 million, and the literacy rate is 69.95%. However the backward sections show a ratio of 49.8% male and 31% female ratio.


The schools are run by the Punjab School Education Board and other Boards like the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Free primary education is provided between 6-14 years. In 2003-04 the total number studying in primary schools were 12,606 while in middle and high schools were 2544 and 2150 respectively. The Senior secondary school students numbered 1092. 18,924 students on the whole were enrolled in school institutions. St. Xavier's Sr. Sec. Schools in Mohali, Bathinda, Chandigarh and Rampura Phul are well known.

Higher Education

Higher Education is under The Higher Education Department of Punjab Government. The present literacy rate of Punjab is 69.95% with a population of 24.9 million. As the entire world economy is progressive the need for higher education has become a necessity in the state. The infrastructure for education too is advancing rapidly with the increasing use of information technology. Universities With a view to promoting educational development that would produce professionals and craftsmen with skills to man hi-tech super powered machines, the State has developed several universities and colleges in Punjab to meet the increasing demands. Apart from five universities, this state also has two deemed universities in Punjab.

The five universities in the state are at Chandigarh, Patiala, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar. These universities serve the educational needs of students in 200 colleges. Among these universities the Punjab Agricultural University is noted for its yeoman services in the line of agriculture. Other Universities are Punjab University Chandigarh, Punjabi University Patiala and Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar. Besides these, there are others like Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab Technical University, Ludhiana, Punjab Veterinary Sciences University, Talwandi Sabo and Punjab Medical University, Faridkot.

Colleges in Punjab

There are 410 colleges for under graduates and post graduates in Punjab. While 16,000 students study in seventy five post graduated colleges, there are 355 colleges catering to the educational needs of 44,000 students in the state. Vocational Education

Vocational Education is provided after High School education in class 11th and 12th in 345 selected schools of the State. Every year about 20,000 students are enrolled in these courses. The various trades and skills are offered after XII class to students under specified groups such as Agriculture, Commerce, Home Science, Engineering and General.

Distance Education:

The state provides opportunities through Distance Learning to school drop outs as well as graduate and post graduate education to working people. Panjab University Department of Correspondence Studies, Chandigarh offers Courses at various levels to students in several streams mainly arts/science/commerce as well as other courses

Coaching Classes

In order to cater to students aspiring for the competitive exams as well as to the professional courses, coaching centers reach out to the need of the students. Through intensive coaching, coarse material and course software the students are prepared to meet their goals and attempt the exams successfully. Apart from group coaching individual classes are also given.
