Known for its legendary heroes, the National Defense Academy besides being a paradise for the retiring, as much as for its famous Chivada and 'Shrewsbury Biscuits', this cultural capital of the State of Maharashtra is growing rapidly with the increasing technological and industrial development to become an ideal spot for students pursuing higher education in fields like medicine, engineering, business management, mass communication and others.
Several overseas students also profit from the congenial climate and pleasant surroundings to enhance study and research. The Apex Bodies for Education based in Pune are the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. Pune also is the regional base of MSBTE (Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education)
Schools
Schools in Pune are under the Maharashtra State Board of Education. More than 120 schools have been listed, of which the prestigious schools are Don Bosco's, Loyola High School, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Podar International and others.
After the State Board, the ICSE ranks second in educational facilities for undergraduates. There are around thirteen schools under ICSE Board in Pune. Some of them are The Bishop's School, St. Mary's School, Riverdale International, St. Mathews and others
Universities
There are in all about ten Universities. Among them five universities have received the deemed status. The Pune University is reputed to be among the first five Indian Universities. It not only has 240 Colleges with 46 departments but also 118 Institutions. No wonder, the university has a sizable number of foreign students from South Asia. As its first offshore venture from Oxford Business School, in 2008, the University of Oxford expressed its plans to set up the Oxford University India Business Centre (OUIBC) at Pune.
