Polytechnics in India have undergone rapid change from the times they first began to offer skilled persons in the mechanical and electrically operated divisions of the industry. With the advance of technology and computerization polytechnics commenced courses on similar lines to meet the demands of the modern age. Polytechnic refers to a variety of courses in the technical field with basic engineering techniques. At present polytechnic institutes offer 3 year courses in engineering and on successful completion issue diplomas. Some institutes also offer courses of short duration. Unlike Degree courses these diploma courses cater to students of varying levels even with minimum qualification like SSLC or X Grade. State technical Boards regulate the polytechnics of the state. The apex body that monitors the polytechnics in India is known as All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). Degree courses in universities can also be attempted by students who have completed the polytechnic course.
Polytechnic Diploma Courses
Courses available in polytechnics are categorized under several disciplines in varying levels classified as tests. The courses are viz. Architectural Assistantship, Civil Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Beauty Culture, Fashion design, Chemical Engineering, Garment Fabrication, Electrical Engineering, Medical Laboratory, Plastic Technology, Textile Design and others.

Fill time diploma courses are offered under different categories. For the admission to some courses the AICTE approved Polytechnics have laid down procedures like the Common entrance test for the full time diploma courses. The test has several levels e.g. Test No 1 includes candidates with minimum X pass, whereas XII Grade is the minimum for Test 2, 3, 4, and 5.

APPLICATION FORMS/date of issue
The cost of the application form for the above courses under AICTE for CET is Rs. 350/- (cash payment)
Post paid /Bank Drafts of Rs. 350/- should reach the Controller, Board of Technical education, Muni Maya Ram Marg, Pitampura, Delhi - 110 088 by 19.04.2010 4 p.m.
The name of the candidate alongwith address and phone number must be clearly written on the self addressed envelope (24x30 cm) affixing Rs. 50 stamp. The request for info and application form must be mentioned eg. 'Request for CET 2010 Information Bulletin.
DATE OF ISSUE of application forms is from 1.04.2010 to 30.04.2010.
Post graduate Diploma courses
While there are a number of institutes offering diploma courses to post graduate students

Diploma in Business Computing, Bio Informatics, Tally, Computer Hardware and Diploma in DTP are short duration courses varying from one-two-four- five months up to one year. The eligibility for post graduate courses is minimum graduation.
