Education in Mumbai

Mumbai the economic capital of India is also well known for education as much as it is for its Bollywood fame. Research centers that are renowned nationwide and abroad for its scientists are TIFR and BARC. One of the ten top colleges of 'India Today' fame is also located in Mumbai viz. St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. Moreover the first Veterinary College was founded in Mumbai, at Parel. A great number of Mumbai's colleges are almost Mumbai-university affiliated, one of the largest in the world. In all there are eleven other universities. This city which is known for its film world, also houses one of the best Film-Video institutes.

Education Boards:

The school education board run by the Govt. of Maharashtra is known as SSC. Besides this there is the CBSE and ICSE (Central Board of Secondary Education and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) MSBTE The Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education

Schools in Mumbai:

1191 Government schools are run by the (BMC) Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The medium of instruction is mostly, Marathi. A few other languages of instruction are also offered. More and more of such schools also cater to education in slums. The Archdiocese of Mumbai runs 150 schools catering to every economic class. The CBSE and ICSE schools in the city total 36 and 58 schools respectively. While Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools in Mumbai have reached 3075, there are comparatively very few Institutes for vocational training (19). On the whole the schools that are in great demand are the private schools which offer better educational facilities. St. Stanislaus, Don Bosco and St. Xavier's are renowned schools in Mumbai.

Among the convent schools Canossa Convent, Auxilium, Durello Convent and St. Mary's School are the prestigious institutes of education. After Std. XI and XII also known as Junior College, students move to the Degree Courses. While a great majority of the students opt for the Arts/Science/Commerce stream, there are several colleges that offer other courses such as Professional and Vocational Courses too.

The total number of Junior Colleges (Std. XI & XII) are 330 among who is well known. The ratio between Engineering, Architecture and Pharmacy Colleges stands at 38:7:9 respectively. Dr. Antonia D'Silva Technical School and Junior College offers several educational facilities to students all over the state and country.

Professional Courses:

Students aspiring to the various professions would do well to check the status of the institutes whether they are approved by either the ACTE, DEC (Distance Education Council) or UGC (University Grants Commission)

Some Professional Courses are offered by Medical Colleges, Dental, Management Colleges, Pharmacy Colleges, Law Colleges, Mass Communication, Engineering, B.Ed, Social Work and Architecture.

Some of the A Grade Colleges are Tata Institute of Social Studies and Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies.

Vocational Courses:

The AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) is an apex body responsible for courses in Engineering, Management, Architecture, Town Planning, Pharmacy, Applied Arts and Crafts, Hotel Management and Catering Technology.

Technical Institutes

College Institutes offer courses in Computers, Bio-technology as well as Polytechnic. Institutes in Mumbai like the TIFR, BARC and St. Xavier's Technical Institute are well known. Institutes of Technology offer courses like Bachelor of Engg., Computer Engg., Electrical Engg., Mechanical Engg., Electronics and Telecommunication Engg. As well as Information Technology. FCRIT and Fr. Agnel's is a reputed technical institute. There is an increasing demand for LLB and MCA in the Mumbai colleges. Several institutes offer education to students who desire to excel in these professions especially in the LLB and MCA.

Distance Learning:

Distance Education is pursued by students desiring to advance in the professional field, as well as school drop outs. It is getting more and more popular with working students who wish to earn as well as learn. The initial inhibitions of distance learning has currently reduced to a great extent. The University of Mumbai offers correspondence courses in MBA, MA, MSc, MBA, MD, MSc and several others. Special Education Mumbai:
