Higher Education provided by the Directorate of Collegiate Education since 1960 aims at bringing college level education to the common man. Under its jurisdiction the directorate governs eight universities, 349 degree colleges of the government together with private and aided colleges numbering 299 with the help of six regional offices of the directorate viz. Mangalore, Bangalore, Mysore, Shimoga, Dharwad and Gulbarga.

Department of Technical education Karnataka

With the advance of technology and development rising needs of students in the technical fields has brought about a revolution in its technological pursuit. The State of Karnataka offers diverse options to students in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, automobile engineering, chemical engineering, computer science and engineering among others. Eligibility for the courses offered require a score of 40% in GM, IIIA IIA, IIB and IIIB categories. The fee structure is Rs. 1700(Tuition fee)for all categories plus other fees (sports, i-card, library, development and magazine cost) except SC/ST students.

Opportunities await students desiring to pursue M.Tech., through distance education. There are institutes that offer courses in the technical stream in Karnataka. One of the institutes is M. Tech (IT) Karnataka State Open University distance Education. This institute's M.Tech course is approved by the DEC (Distance Education Council). Regional Institute of Education Karnataka

The Regional Institute of Education is under the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training). NCERT is part of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. Of the five Regional Institutes of Education the Regional Institute of Education, Mysore, Karnataka is a well known educational institute. The other Regional institutes are in Shillong, Ajmer, Bhubaneswar and Bhopal.
