Primary schools in 1950-51 were 209671 while Upper Primary Schools were 13596 in number. While the government schools are in the Gujarati medium, private schools follow the English medium of instruction.

Secondary education in Gujarat

The Gujarat State Education system allows the 10+2 structure. High School comprises of students in class 8 to 10. Students who pass Class X move from High School to Senior Secondary School. High school and Senior Secondary Schools in the year 2001-02 were 133492 in number compared to 7416 High/Secondary School in 1950-01. After having passed Class XII a student opts for any college course of his choice to pursue graduation.

Distance Education in Gujarat

The Commissionerate of Higher Education monitors the universities in Gujerat State. There are fifteen universities in Gujarat offering higher education to students in the state out of which ten are listed under the Gujarat Commissionerate. Higher education is provided through 42 government colleges and 380 aided colleges. Moreover research facilities are provided through fifteen institutions. In all there are 450 financially autonomous colleges. While the state offers higher education to 17482 students in law colleges, 71,146 in science colleges 237,802 students pursue education in art colleges while 1,92,068 are in commerce colleges. The well known university is the Gujarat University, Gujarat. Universities also offering other fields of education like agriculture and Ayurveda are Gujarat Agricultural University, Gujarat and Gujarat Ayurved University, Gujarat. Opportunities for M.Sc education in Gujarat are available in the following streams viz. Nano Science and Technology, Bio technology, Medical bio-technology and Marine Science.

Computer Education in Gujarat

While prospects are very high for computer professionals, the number of students seeking courses in computer education is increasing. The total number of universities that offer computer education are nine in the state of Gujarat. In the year 2009 fifty institutes of computer education provided educational courses to 3150 students in computer education in Gujarat.
