St. Stephen's College, Delhi

St. Stephen's College is one of the pioneer colleges in Delhi, India. It is the most ancient college that offers good quality education to the students. It develops the minds of the students' aesthetic and intellectual psyche. It also teaches about the teachings of Jesus Christ and develops in them the spiritual and moral sides. The motto of the college in Latin language is "Ad Dei Gloriam" which means in English "To the Glory of God". St. Stephens is a co-educational institution that imparts higher education learning to the students which is located in University Enclave under The University of Delhi.

History of Saint Stephen's College

Saint Stephens College was founded in 1881 since it is an ancient college so it is very popular among people. It was first consorted with Calcutta University, later with Punjab University and finally in 1922 established under Delhi University. This college has also the Chapel, students societies and clubs. The college concentrates on developing the integrated personality of the students. It also provides scholarship and other financial aid to the needy and deserving students. It also allots awards and prizes to the students who have shown achievement in academics and also in extra curricular activities. The faculty of the college is further divided into departments that include department of English, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, History, Political Science, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu and Persian, Physical Education and various other staffs contribute in imparting the high quality education in the students. It also offers the residential facilities for the students who could not do daily up and down or for the students who have come from far off place.

Admission Procedure

Admission Procedure starts in the college from mid May to early July. The classes for the session usually start from mid July. Candidates who are selected for the admission on the basis of higher marks in qualifying examinations have to go through an interview procedure. The college also offers admission to the students on the basis of sports quota to the students. In order to get the guidance for knowing the admission procedure for 2010, the helpline number is provided here that is 011-27666300. After 16th August all the admission procedure is closed. In order to apply for the degree courses for accessing higher education from the college you need to first fill the application form.

The prospectus along with two application forms, residence information brochure, sports form and the college handbook can be obtained from the college office from Monday to Saturday as from 25 May to 14 June from 10 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 4 pm. The cost price of the forms is given below:

1. Admissions Prospectus :- Rs. 100

2. Residence Information Brochure :- Rs. 100

3. Sports Form :- Rs. 50

4. College Handbook : - Rs. 50

The application forms can also be obtained through post by sending a demand draft which includes the postage charge of Rs. 50 payable to "Principal, St. Stephen's College, Delhi."

For getting admission in the undergraduate courses, generally the weightage is given for the three components that include class X marks (10%), class XII marks (75%) and for the interview (15%). In an interview the academic qualification, co curricular and general awareness and sense of values are given higher preference while choosing the students. Cut off list generally decides the admission procedure of the students. Cut off List 2009 gives students an idea about the marks on which they can get admission in this college. The submission procedure for the application form is that they can either submit the application form at the designated counters or also they can send it by post which includes the self addressed envelope (size 9" x 4"). 15 June is the last date for the receipt of submitting the application form. If the candidates wish to apply for more than one programme, they should fill up the separate application forms.

Undergraduate Course

To apply for the undergraduate course, application forms are available from 25 May onwards and the last date for submission of the application form is 15 June. The interview list is declared by them on 18th June. The academic record of the students and the good performance of the students in an interview are of high importance in getting admission in this college. The registration for the admission is being made on 15 July. Those who want to apply under the sports quota need to fill a separate sports quota form (also indicating the sports you played.)

Post Graduate Course

For the Graduate course, candidates can avail the application forms from this college from 22 June onwards and the last date for submitting the application forms is 6 July and the interview schedule is decided by them later. The result is laid on the notice board of college and the official website of this college. For the post graduate courses the prescribed admission form is to be filled or directly contact with the specific department.

Documents Required for Admission

1. Christian candidates must attach a testimonial of the Baptism certificate. Those who claim for admission under Christian Dalit category, they need to show the status certificate from the Diocesan Bishop.

2. Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe candidates must attach a proof.

3. Physically Challenged candidates must attach the proof.

4. Candidates from the foreign board should attach an equivalent certificate from the Association of Indian Authorities (AIU).

5. Two copies of a passport size photograph.

6. The Slip which acknowledges about the receipt of the application form.

7. Character certificate from the last educational institution.

8. Date of birth certificate.

9. Mark sheet of class X and XII.

Fee Structure

The fee structure of St. Stephen College for the undergraduate course is different for the resident scholar and non resident scholar. For pursuing humanities non resident scholar has to pay Rs. 8, 255 and for resident scholar, it amounts to Rs. 21, 705. To pursue science, for non resident scholar it is Rs. 8, 755 and for resident scholar it is Rs. 22, 205. For the students who are seeking to take admission for MA and M Sc course, the fees are as follows for non resident scholar Rs. 17, 000 and for resident scholar Rs. 46, 000.


St. Stephen's College Delhi also organizes Alumni for the students who have completed their respective degree course in the field. Under this the students will be offered dinner and also the prizes are distributed for the best student in the field of academic discipline. It is a great moment for the students to go back to their college life. A Stephanian can come along with their spouses and can enjoy the party. The fund being collected shall be used for the needy students who could pursue the degree course from the Stephen's college. The sports being offered under this college include Aquatics, badminton, basketball, cricket, chess, cross-country, lawn tennis, squash, table tennis and shooting. The college also offers admission to the candidates on the basis of sports quota.


St Stephen's has many societies which provide students an avenue to expose themselves in an outer world and recognize their skills and develop their talents. The society introduces them to open up and build their skills. These include debating, dramatics, mountaineering, film and music appreciation, social service, photography, electronics, cine club, choreography, campus placement cell, English literary society, music, fine arts, hiking, spic macay and wildlife society. This college has opened up a wide opportunity for the students to develop or even recognize their latent capacities by participating or involving in the extra curricular activities and coordinating with the club.
