Education in Delhi

Delhi Education Department The country's capital boasts of a good number of top educational institutions, apex bodies as well as a diversity of professional and vocational courses. It is no wonder that several thousands of students from other states flock to avail of Delhi education. The literacy rate in Delhi has gone up by 6 percent and has moved ahead to 81.8% while the national literacy rate was 75.3%(1991 census).The Delhi government has in its budget for the education sector allocated a Rs. 1,122 crore outlay as proposed expenditure.

Delhi Education Boards

Several Education Boards run the schools in the country's capital such as the City Corporation, CBSE and ICSE boards which follow the educational policies of the government. The educational bodies of the country that are housed in Delhi are known as apex bodies that regulate the standard of education, monitor the working of educational policies, revise the laws and draw up new framework for the better functioning of education in the institutions of the country. They are AIMA, AICTE, CSIR, CBSE, DOEACC, ISRO, ICAI, ISI, NCERT, UPSC, NIOS AND UGC.

The Delhi School Education Act

According to the Delhi School Education Act, 1973, The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, Article 21 (right to life with dignity), Article 21-A (right to education) and Article 38 (right to social justice) of the Constitution of India read with UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). The children are protected under this Act and thus the Directorate of Education in Delhi promotes and encourages the education of children in Delhi. The Delhi school education minister under the Ministry of Education has been taking a keen interest in the progressive reforms for education in the state.

Primary/Middle/Sec. & Sr. Sec Schools in Delhi

No. of Primary Schools was 2515 and Govt. Expense for Education was Rs. 11442 lakhs
No. of Middle Schools was 635 and Govt. Expense for Education was Rs. 8.22 lakhs
No. of Sec & Sr. Sec Schools was 254 & Govt. Expense for Education was Rs. 13685 lakhs


The Archdiocese of Delhi runs seventeen schools catering to students of every economic class. The main thrust of their policy is to offer education to all groups irrespective of caste, class or religion thus bringing the weaker sections on par with the well to do class. St. Michael's Sr. Sec. School, Pusa Road, is making inroads in providing opportunities to students through various facilities of Smart Classrooms, Training for musical operettas and other fields and Yoga, besides excellent scholastic coaching so that children are stress free and can truly enjoy school.

Vocational/Technical Courses in Delhi Education

In 217 schools, 9250 students obtained the benefit of vocational training.Vocational Education is provided through courses in technology, commerce, engineering, health and paramedical services, secretarial practice and home-science. Courses in Hotel Management as well as Travel and Tourism are gaining popularity along with rising demand in the hospitality industry.

Higher Education

As per statistical data the ratio between institutions run by the government and private institutes at the degree level are 6:30 respectively. There are five universities in Delhi out of which one is an open university. Besides these there are two Institutes of National Importance as well as nine deemed universities. With regard to Delhi education and Colleges in Delhi, out of 165 Degree colleges run by the govt. in Delhi, 82 are under Delhi University and the remaining 83 are affiliated to GGSIP University.

Technical Institutes: Delhi education:

The AICTE approves the Technical Education Institutions in India. In Delhi 43 Institutes of Technical Education have been approved at the Degree/PG level. The Technical Institutes that offer diploma courses are 21 in number. At the Certificate course level, there are 17 ITI's run by the Govt., out of a total 72 Institutes. The other 55 are run by the Private Sector.

Distance Education in Delhi:

Earning students desiring to avail the opportunity of distance learning will be able to choose a correspondence course, however distant their home may be. The University gives them the option of selecting a regular college too. The Indira Gandhi National Open University as well as other Delhi universities like Amity University offers distance education.

Part-time Courses/Evening Colleges

Delhi University offers a 3 year Part time course in management. Students wishing to study arts, science or commerce also can take part time courses in the university.

Coaching Classes

The city boasts of excellent coaching facilities at every level, class and subject individually and group based. Students can avail of IAS Coaching, IELTS Coaching, MBA Coaching, TOEFL Coaching, IIT Coaching etc. Off the Beaten Path: Students wishing to pursue a different path, a way that is not common, choose self motivated careers in life. Eco-tourism is gaining ground with many enthusiasts, who, though not green behind the ears choose to chart a green career through life to protect the ecology.

Foreign Students studying in Delhi: A Study India program that offered a first hand experience of various cultural aspects of India was benefited by two hundred students from the UK. The three week program apart from education visits and tours also provided the students with a week's experience in the well-know business offices and non-profit organizations.


An opportunity for XII grade and college students to learn computer course are available. Various courses that are short term, full-time courses as well as course for engineers are conducted at APTEC. Some of them are ACTS Career course, ACCP Career course and Sun, Oracle & Red Hat Certification courses etc. Aptec also provides placements on the completion of the full term courses.


NIIT offers SAP Education programs are offered by NIIT not only to graduates and post graduates but also to working professionals in diverse modes e.g. online and personal instructor led modes.
