The Cochin University was set up in 1971 was renamed as Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in 1986. This university has been selected by the (UGC) University Grants Commission as a center for excellence in lasers and opto-electronic fields in science. The School of Legal Studies erected in CUSAT has a new introduction viz the setting up of the IPR Chair in the department of Law, Cochin University of Science and Technology. The Ministry of HRD has also set up another department viz. the Rajiv Gandhi Chair on Sustainable Management. Apart from these the Cochin University of Science and Technology CUSAT has also been upgraded by the HRD Ministry, to the level of an Indian Institute of Technology. Nine faculties have been structured as part of the academic section viz. Engineering, Science, Social Sciences and Technology, Environmental Studies, Law, Marine Sciences, Medical Sciences and Technology, Marine Sciences and Humanities.
