Chennai, the intellectual hub of education in the country has presented many a statesman, scientist, jurist, administrator, philosopher and musician to the world. The city is also famous for its films and music as much as for its education. Firsts
Founded in 1835, The Madras Medical College is one of the first institutions of the country and features among the oldest medical schools
Education in Chennai has come a long way, with regard to assessment of students. In the near future no more would students wield pen and paper at examinations as these would be taken over by the on-line system of examinations. Universities are showing promise of a unique network viz. (Wi-Fi) Wireless Fidelity to enhance the educational system. This will cost the National Knowledge Network an extra e-link cost of Rs. 6,000/- crores. Schools in Chennai
State owned schools are supplemented by private schools in the city. With Tamil and English as mediums of instruction, most schools are under the State run Education Board. While a few schools in are under the CBSE or ICSE Board a few others follow the American system of International Baccalaurate. There are also schools for differently abled like the Montfort School.
Universities
Among the 435 listed under the apex body UGC (University Grants Commission) in India, 's universities include, the well-known University of Madras and Anna University. The University of Madras besides being recognized for its potential of excellence has been accredited by NAAC.(has been accredited by (NAAC) National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

Colleges
Government Colleges are seven in number. However education facilities are sought more from the private colleges who deliver quality and value.
The city of Chennai boasts of a great number of autonomous colleges. While there are several prestigious colleges, the Loyola College, also autonomous, is one of repute having received from the University the status as 'College with Potential For Excellence'. From its portals have emerged a future Cardinal, a President, World chess champion, Founder of a university, Chief Editor and Writers not forgetting tennis players, a film director, a composer and several actors.
Higher Education
There has been a move to waive the tuition fees in the State with regard to postgraduate courses in the state run colleges due to the exorbitant fee structure, especially in five state-run colleges.
Professional Courses
Professional Courses in Computers, M. Tech and MCA are increasingly in demand. While there are Colleges of Medicine, Engineering, Biotechnology, Architecture, offering courses to XII passed students that require a high percentage, opportunities for higher education are also provided in Compute and IT Colleges, Law Colleges, Dental Colleges and Law Colleges. Polytechnics
A great number of Polytechnics are available for those who do not wish to continue further education in the University. Diplomas are issued in various skills and arts in institutes offering vocational training.

Rahman bagging the Oscar award for his Music.
