Education in Bihar

Renowned for the ancient Nalanda University, Bihar is the twelfth largest state in the country, once the richest in mineral wealth. It is one of the states that has the largest population of youth in the country. The great seats of ancient learning were Vaishali, Anga, Videha and Magadha. Education in modern Bihar is challenged by the great number of students seeking admissions in the limited number of state institutions. Hence the reason for migration into neighbouring states for education. The well known institute like St. Xavier's is the oldest begun in Bihar before independence. Other pioneering institutions like the Carmel school began in 1944. Also interesting to read about is the Lace School in 1940 for girls in Bihar. In 2001 the female literacy rate was 33.57 while the total literacy figures showed a mere 47.53. Much development in the educational sphere is yet to be achieved in the State. With urban areas like Patna reaching literacy levels of 63.82 other areas like Kishanganj had only 31.02 literates in the year 2001.

Primary Education in Bihar

Primary education in Bihar comprises of the Pre-Primary, Primary, Elementary, Secondary and Senior Secondary Sections. There are two boards for Intermediate/Secondary Education. Schools in Bihar are under the Bihar School Examination Board or CBSE and ICSE. The total enrolment in Pre-Primary schools was 27316. The number of schools with the primary section was 53697. In the year 2003 about 1,15,400 teachers were employed. While provision is made in the State Budget for Education in Bihar, positive growth in the output and quality of primaryeducation is the need of the hour in Bihar. The BEP viz.Bihar Education Project or Bihar Education Project Council is responsible for promotion of Universal Elementary Education in Bihar. Through the various programs like SSA and NPEGEL the state is working towards inclusion of the backward regions as literate districts.

Education in Bihar Women

The literacy levels of education in the women of Bihar state are quite low. Hence efforts are being mooted to promote the development of literacy of women in Bihar. At Patna, Bihar state, Dr. Manmohan Singh launched the National Mission for female literacy 2009 to mark the International Year of Literacy with a hope that 60 million women would be literate through the National Mission by the year 2012.
To promote the literacy of women education in Bihar and in the entire country the Saakshar Bharat Mission aims at community approach in the implementation of this program along with Panchayati Raj Institutions as well as self help groups in the state of Bihar and other states.

Higher Education in Bihar

The increasing demand for higher education in Bihar has seen a corresponding increase in institutions for higher education like the St. Xavier's College of Education, Patna and IIT, Patna. On the whole there are regular colleges of Arts, Science and Commerce that number about 742 catering to around 627338 students in Bihar higher education. Nine colleges of engineering provide B.E, B.Sc. and B.Arch. Degrees to 6727 students. Apart from twenty three medical colleges for 15,328 students offering MBBS degrees there are seventeen universities offering post graduate course to 35,000 students pursuing MA, MSc and M.Com degrees as well as 960 students doing research and doctoral studies in Ph.D, D.Phil and D.Sc. Besides these there are two deemed universities and eleven research institutions in Bihar. Teachers' Training Schools total about 195 in which 1529 trainees are groomed for the B.Ed. Degree and B.T. as well.

Distance Education in Bihar

The popular distance education universities in which students pursue distance education are the following (IGNOU)Indira Gandhi National Open University, Acharya Nagarjuna University Center for Distance Education, Annamalai University - Directorate of Distance Education, Institute of Distance Education - University of Madras and Mahatma Gandhi University - School of Distance Education.
