The National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore known as NCBS is an autonomous institute under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Along with the Department of Biological Sciences DBS the National Centre for Biological Sciences is also set up in Mumbai. Graduates in science, engineering or medicine are eligible to the course. Excellent programs in the field of biology are offered to students who qualify in the entrance exam that are conducted through written examination followed by an interview in the various test centers and also have a bachelor's degree in basic sciences, engineering or medicine. The written tests are held nationwide in the different centers of states in India. Students are given admissions according to merit basis.
NCBS Admissions
The NCBS website provides admission details for the academic year 2010-11. Online application forms are available. Registration online is accepted on the website. However demand draft of the admission fee could be sent by courier of speed post with seven days. Students can also use the website for online payment. Besides this the hall ticket is also obtained online within a certain period. To access the hall ticket online the website provides instructions online. Students pursuing the academic course at NCBS may download the necessary information regarding library, shuttle timings, etc. TIFR invites candidates to apply around August/September first week annually. Written tests are conducted in December and students who qualify in CSIR/ICMR/Gate exam can apply for the entrance test for NCBS admission in the NCBS PhD course. NCBS results of GS2010 Entrance Test held on 13.12.09 have been declared for Bangalore, Biology NCBS. Students can check their Roll Nos. and obtain their results.
NCBS PHD
Candidates with Masters in any discipline are offered Masters in any basic science stream viz. medicine, pharmacy, engineering or veterinary science Several PHD Programs are offered by NCBS One of the interdisciplinary courses that have been offered is the newly introduced program viz iBio. It covers the subject of physical sciences and comprises of application of its principles in solving Biological problems. The PhD iBio program issues degrees in Physics, Chemical Sciences as well as Biology. With an aim to offer facilities for research in the bio-medical field a fresh masters decree as well as doctoral program is offered to medical students.

Apart from the above programs there are other courses offered by the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) to students viz to trainees having completed their doctoral programs. There are training post doctoral programs as well as others trainee teachers and staff at the National Centre for Biological Sciences. PhD application forms are accepted all the year round while appointments are conducted in August. Students can avail of the application forms online and submit them along with the fee.
NCBS Bangalore
The National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore offers the following categories of postdoctoral fellows. NCBS funded post doctorate fellowships are available to candidates. In this regard, students would be required to present a seminar on the PhD research carried out based on which the Committee of specialist will make their selection. Further, referee letters and inputs from laboratory and other faculty at NCBS also will be asked of the candidates. NCBS Bangalore offers fellowship only for a year hence outside funding is required from NCBS fellows. Application forms for fellowship are available on NCBS Bangalore website.
