AICTE - All India Council of Technical Education

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the Apex Body that regulates and monitors the standard of technical education in the country. AICTE was established at the national level in 1945. Further, in accordance with the National Policy of Education 1986 the All India Council for Technical Education was vested with authority at the statutory level. Hence it has the authority to formulate norms and standards, monitor quality maintenance, planning, certification and awards in order to regulate and promote development and management of the country's technical education.

AICTE Courses

A wide range of Courses fall under the umbrella of technical education under AICTE viz. engineering training and research, architecture, management, pharmacy, town planning, applied arts, catering technology and hotel management in various categories. With its headquarters based at Janpath, in Delhi, the administrative and other blocks of the AICTE are set up at the JNU Campus as well as NBCC Place New Delhi.

AICTE Approved Colleges (Degree)

In India, 1346 degree colleges of Engineering catering to 4,39,689 students have been approved as AICTE colleges. With regard to MCA institutions the number of approved colleges stood at 1012 with 54167 students, in 2004-05. Moreover there are 60 Colleges of Hotel Management and Catering Technology with 3685 total student strength. Apart from this thirty one institutes have been approved for admission of foreign nationals. A great number of colleges are still to be approved.

AICTE Approved Institutes (Diplomas)

The Institutes offering Diploma Courses that are approved under AICTE are as under: 181 Engineering Institutes for 2,65,416 students; 415 Pharmacy Institutes for 24,029 students; 63 HMCT Institutes for 4,020 students and 25 Institutes of Architecture for 905 students. Besides the above there are a host of unapproved institutes in the country. As many job opportunities are available for students from AICTE approved institutions, these colleges/institutes are in great demand.


Colleges are approved in accordance with norms set up by the statutory section of AICTE. The All India Council of Technical education approved colleges and institutes for degree and diploma courses should abide by the norms specified for each field in technical education. For example with regard to Engineering viz. Sections 12.1 to Sections 12.8 explain in General and Special terms the required norms laid down by AICTE. The building area, building space, number of rooms for Theory, Tutorial and Drawing, Laboratories, workshops, teaching aids, administrative offices, staff residence, hostel, furniture, Land and Building Space for amenities is specified among the AICTE norms.


The faculty under The All India Council of Technical Education can be classified under two categories of Degree Faculty and Diploma. Each of these have further classification under the various fields of technical education such as management, architecture, pharmacy, hotel management and catering technology, engineering etc. Other aspects like Salary Scale, Staff Development come within the purview of rules regarding AICTE faculty.
